3 Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common concern, with the CDC estimating half of the adult U.S. population has some form of it. Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first and mildest stage of periodontal disease. Most patients will not feel too much discomfort during this stage. Typical symptoms include swollen, red and bleeding gums. However, many people do not experience any symptoms, which is why it is so important to see a periodontist regularly so that any signs can be detected as soon as they appear. Any damage caused during this stage is reversible.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more severe stage of gum disease where pockets begin to form between the teeth and gums. These pockets are ideal environments for plaque and bacteria to grow, irreversibly damaging the tissue and supporting bone. Symptoms often include bad breath (halitosis) and receding gums.

Advanced Periodontitis

In the final stage of gum disease, periodontitis has been allowed to advance. Here, bacteria further destroy the tissue and bone that support the teeth, causing tooth and bone loss. Treatment is imperative at this stage to prevent further loss.

Systemic Diseases Related to Periodontitis

Studies show gum disease is connected to various systemic conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some forms of cancer. It is believed that the bacteria in the gums is allowed to travel to other areas in the body, causing inflammation.
