Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is commonly used in dental offices to help patients relax. A mask is placed over the nose and mouth, and you simply breathe in the gas. The gas helps you feel numb, relaxed, and even euphoric, although you are completely awake during your procedure. Nitrous oxide is very easy to control, making it a commonly used and safe option for sedation dentistry.
Oral Sedation
Before your appointment, you will be given anti-anxiety medications that help you relax and stay calm during your treatment. You may take the pill up to an hour before your procedure. It’s important you have someone to drive you home afterward, as you may feel drowsy once treatment is complete.
IV Sedation
One tried-and-true method for relaxing in the dental chair is IV sedation dentistry. Using medication placed through an IV, this puts you in a deep state of relaxation. IV sedation is particularly effective for patients who don’t numb easily with a local anesthetic.
Local Anesthetic
With a local anesthetic, certain areas of the mouth are numbed before treatment starts in order to avoid pain. You may stay numb for several hours after treatment, but local anesthetic has no lasting side effects to worry about.
