Along with seasonal ailments such as colds and the flu, many people experience a marked increase in oral health maladies during the winter—even in subtropical climates like here in Florida. Indeed, changes in temperature, even if they are slight, tend to exacerbate or heighten existing conditions, and, in some cases, may even spur some new ones on. At the office of Lindsay B. Eastman, DDS, MS, PA, we have proudly been serving patients in the South Florida area for more than 30 years. Our periodontist in Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton, FL recommends these four tips to help ensure optimal oral health this winter.
Make a List of Preventative Measures, Check it Twice
In addition to eating more sweets this time of the year, which can lead to cavities, other less obvious oral-related ailments commonly associated with the season include dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, and canker and cold sores. Therefore, it is important to be extra diligent with your oral hygiene. The following measures should be practiced at home to help stave off any issues:
– Ensure you are flossing and brushing at least twice a day, particularly after each meal
– Use a fluoride rinse daily or, for tooth sensitivity, a topical dental cream or gel nightly
– Gargle with warm salt water a few times a week to promote good gum health
– Drink lots of water, as sufficient hydration can help offset the effects of dry mouth
