Dental Implant Considerations

Dr. Lindsay Eastman and his expert dental team at Eastman Periodontics & Implants in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, FL want you to be as knowledgeable as possible when it comes to your treatment options. Listed below are some great tips to keep in mind before you undergo a dental implant treatment. Be sure to review these and don’t hesitate to ask us any questions about your procedure.

You might experience some pain – Once your procedure is complete you might experience some latent pain in and around your mouth, the doctor will prescribe you pain medication to subdue the pain.

An ice pack over the jaw can help the pain subside – Sometimes pain medication may not always do the trick after your operation. If so , you might need to place an ice pack over your jaw. This has proven useful in helping to alleviate excessive pain.

Your mouth will feel a bit awkward at first – For a few weeks after the surgery, you might feel some awkwardness in the mouth. If this happens do not prod the implant with your tongue or fingers. Doing so will cause it to shift out of position, and possibly fall off.

The surgery could be canceled – During the examination prior to your operation, the doctor might find cause to cancel the surgery. For instance, if there are telltale signs of diabetes this will force a cancellation. Also, if there are signs of an infection within your mouth this could cancel the operation.

You will be given a special diet guideline for the healing period – Once your implants are in place, the doctor will typically give you a guideline on certain foods you should avoid.

Checkups are recommended – After the completion of your treatment you will need to come back for a few check-ups. These are to confirm your implants are not shifting positions. It also helps the doctor to see if the implant is having an adverse reaction on you. Although rare, your body can reject your implant. .
