Prevent Failing Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great tooth replacement option if you value durability and longevity. Many people never have to replace their implants once they are placed, but it’s important to understand that the reliability of your implants depends largely on how you care for them. Even though they are aren’t susceptible to decay like natural teeth, the tissue around them can still decay and cause the implants to fail. For this reason, your Bradenton periodontist will give you very detailed instructions about caring for your implants after they’re placed.

Caring for Your Implants

Caring for your dental implants is very similar to caring for natural teeth, but may include a few extra steps or specialized tools. Here are the basic steps you should follow if you want your new teeth to last as long as possible.

  1. Floss Every Day
  2. Brush Every Morning and Night
  3. Use water flossers/oral irrigators as needed
  4. Use special antimicrobial mouth rinses as directed by your Bradenton periodontist
  5. Attend regular cleanings/checkups

It’s important to pay close attention to the gum tissue around your implants. If you notice any redness, swelling or other signs of infection, schedule an appointment with your Bradenton periodontist to make sure you’re adequately managing your oral health. In some cases, dental implants fail even when you take excellent care of them. However, in most cases good oral hygiene will prevent implant failure and help them last as long as possible.

You may need to purchase a water flosser/oral irrigator if it’s tough to floss the spaces between your implants. Oral irrigators have been shown to be more effective at reducing bleeding in the gums than regular floss, and they make it easy to get food particles out of hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.
